Start up a Latin Class ~ Introduction Welcome to the area of our website which gives advice for schools interested in starting up Latin, with or without a specialist Latin teacher.
Materials All our materials and support services are designed to support teaching and learning with the
Cambridge Latin Course. This is far and away the most successful and popular Latin course in the country. It has sold nearly 4,000,000 copies to date and is used in 85% of schools which offer Latin.
Once you have had a look at the Cambridge Latin Course textbooks, you may wish to investigate our
additional resources, which are designed to be used by students learning without the support of a subject specialist teacher in the classroom,
or by teachers who wish to deliver Latin but are not themselves Latin specialists. Both print and e-learning materials are available.
Grants Since generous grants are available to help with the cost of purchasing the print resources, and the electronic materials may be bought with e-learning credits,
there is often little or no cost to schools when equipping themselves with the resources necessary to establish a Latin class.
Subject Specialist Support For some schools, the Cambridge Latin Course textbooks, together with a range of additional print and electronic resources, are enough to allow them to run a Latin class. Other schools buy in to our Partnership School scheme to receive
subject specialist support, which may range from undergraduates marking students' work via email to experienced Latin teachers working closely with the school's facilitator.
If your school has video-conferencing facilities, you may wish to take advantage of our ability to provide "face-to-face" tuition in this way.
We particularly recommend this method of teaching and learning to schools without a subject specialist Latin teacher when offering Latin at Key Stage 4 and beyond.
At just £40 per hour (on timetable) and £45 per hour (off timetable), our lessons are a cost-effective route for those wishing to advance to GCSE.
Further Help There are many considerations to address when introducing a new subject without a subject specialist teacher on the staff, whether it be for a term or through to GCSE and A level. If you do not find an answer to your query in this area of our site, please do contact us for help and advice.
Reviews from Schools Finally, if you need convincing that establishing a Latin group in one of the ways described above is pedagogically sound and worthwhile, why not gain inspiration by reading responses from teachers and students?
